Jermain Defoe is determined to hit the ground running on both team and personal fronts this season.
Following the postponement of this weekend's Premier League opener against Everton, our season will now kick-off with the Europa League play-off, first leg against Scottish Premier League side Hearts at Tynecastle stadium in Edinburgh on Thursday.
It’s the first game of an intense 10-day spell where we’ll face Hearts, open our Premeir League campaign at champions United, then face City and then the return leg against Hearts at the Lane.
“There are some big games coming up,” said Jermain, who has been in fine form in pre-season and scored the winner in our final friendly against Athletic Bilbao.
“I’ve always said the first five or six games are so important. You want to get off to a good start, set your stall out and show all the teams that you mean business.
“It’s important that we get off to a good start and on a personal note, as a forward, you want to get a few goals as quickly as possible and take it from there.
“In my experience, if you score a few goals in the first few games, it sets you up for the rest of the season.”
JD admitted to a ‘stop-start’ 2010-11 campaign where he suffered a nasty ankle injury that ruled him out from September to November and he struggled to get going.
“It was the first season where I’ve had injuries and it’s been so up and down,” he added.
“It was really stop-start and I couldn’t get going, couldn’t get into the rhythm that I normally get into. That’s why I’m looking forward to this season and to get off to a good start.”
